Prospective Students
UCF offers transfer students one of the best opportunities available to complete their college education. For prospective students, we provide information, referrals, and advocacy services that will answer most common questions and concerns that students encounter when transferring.

Applying to UCF

Students should apply early. UCF accepts applications up to one year prior to the anticipated term of entrance. We recommend that submitting applications at least six months in advance. Some limited access programs may have a separate application deadline; check with the specific department for exact dates. Students should also review Undergraduate Admissions' admissions criteria.

By applying early and being admitted, you are invited to an early Orientation. This means you register along with native UCF rising juniors. If you procrastinate, you will find yourself in Orientations held late in registration when fewer classes are available and at less popular times.

Application Deadlines
  • November 1, 2006 for the spring 2007 semester
  • March 1, 2007 for the summer 2007 semester
  • July 1, 2007 for the fall 2007 semester

Registration and Orientation

All transfer students must attend Orientation. Once you have been admitted to UCF, a postcard will be mailed to you from the Orientation Center; you will then need to access the Orientation Center Web site at http://www.orientation.ucf.edu to reserve your place. Please follow instructions carefully; address any questions to the Orientation Center staff at (407) 823-5105. Students attend Orientation on a space available basis. We recommend that you attend the earliest Orientation possible for the best choices in course selection.

The Orientation program will assist you with your transition to UCF by providing information about student services, campus life, financial aid, academic support, and university policies and programs. At Orientation you will meet in a group setting with academic advisors from your college or major and prepare to register for classes. Please bring unofficial transcripts to Orientation for advisement; the transcripts sent to Undergraduate Admissions are not available to the advisors at Orientation.

During Orientation you will register for classes. Beginning March 2006 students will be able to register for 3 semesters (Summer 2005, Fall 2005, Spring 2006). Registration is available online, using MyUCF in the college advising offices, and at open computer labs. To help make registration easier, familiarize yourself with academic and registration policies and procedures in the UCF Undergraduate Catalog or Schedule Web Guide; they are usually different from policies at other institutions.

Financial Assistance

Students who plan to receive financial aid should review the Transfer Students page provided by the Office of Financial Assistance to get a general overview of what to do. We urge students transferring to UCF with 100 attempted hours or more, regardless of whether financial aid was ever received, to review the time limit policy of the Satisfactory Academic Progress. If a student has attempted 150 or more hours, we recommend that you meet with a financial aid counselor.

Advising

We help with pre-admission advising, prerequisites for the major, major requirements, major deadlines, foreign language requirements, and information on UCF's general education program, and transfer course equivalencies.

We also offer a special advising program for students who are undeclared freshmen with 45 hours or more, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. We also advise undecided students, students changing majors, students not admitted to limited access programs, and undeclared transfers "disqualified" and seeking re-admission. We have recently created a Major Exploration section that explain the drawbacks of being undeclared and provides resources that can help declare a major. There is also a new Marketable Majors section that highlights 36 majors offered by UCF that have been identified as meeting Florida's future workforce needs.

Students who start at UCF as freshmen or transfer to UCF(without meeting the General Education Program) must meet this requirement. Students who are exempt from UCF's GEP are students who transfer with an A.A. from a Florida community college or a Florida state university. Review UCF's catalog section of the General Education Program.

A Peer Mentor team, former transfer students who are now current UCF students, is also part of the advising team for prospective and current students.

To review the majors and minors offered at UCF, check out the Transfer Student Counseling Manual.

Major Exploration

It is critical for students to choose a major prior to transferring to UCF. By declaring a major, students can avoid taking unnecessary classes and may be able to take UCF major prerequisites while earning their A.A. It is important to be aware UCF degree requirements (gpa requirements, limited access majors, etc.). The Transfer Student Counseling Manual or the UCF Catalog provides the degree requirements of each major.

Students who are undeclared or undecided should develop an action plan, and explore majors and career options. The Marketable Majors section provides insight to majors that Florida Board of Governors has identified as key majors needed to the meet the continuing growth of Florida. The following Web sites can also help students link skills, interests, and abilities to specific UCF majors and careers.

  • Florida Choices Planner, Interest Planner - Interest Planner helps identify skills, increases self-awareness, gives tools to compare, connect, and choose major and career options. It allows students to create and save a portfolio for future reference. After taking the Interest Planner, students can use Holland's Topology, provided by UCF's Career Services and Experiential Learning, to link their Choices Planner Interest Areas to majors available at UCF.
  • Occupational Outlook Handbook - This handbook, provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, is a source of career information, designed to provide information for individuals making decisions about their future work lives. It describes what workers do on the job, working conditions, training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in thousands of occupations.
  • What Can I do with This Major? - This link, provided by UCF's Career Services and Experiential Learning, lists sample occupations, useful skills, professional organizations, and on-campus academic contacts related to a major

Prospective undeclared and undecided students are urged to make an advising appointment with our office.

Undeclared Policy

UCF has established a new policy, effective immediately, regarding undeclared students. The Undeclared Policy can be found in the 2006-2007 UCF Undergraduate Catalog. Undeclared and undecided students coming into UCF with 45 credit hours or more are encouraged to make an appointment prior to Orientation to explore majors and possibly declare or change their major. The policy states:

All students at the University of Central Florida are expected to officially declare a major prior to earning 45 college credit hours (this includes credits earned from CLEP, Dual Enrollment, AP and IB). An administrative hold to prevent future university registration will be placed on the records of all students that have not declared a major. Students must meet with an academic advisor (within Student Development and Enrollment Services, the Colleges, or Regional campuses) to have the hold released .

Please contact Bob Snow, Jackie Jessup, or a student Peer Mentor from this office with your questions or to schedule an appointment.

Decision Days

At Decision Days, UCF Admissions staff provide on-the-spot admission decisions. Students pursuing an A.A. or an articulated A.S. to B.S. from a Florida public community college, who have earned at least 45 credits hours, can bring their application materials to a Decision Day, and get an immediate decision on their application. Dates are listed on the Decision Days page.

Knight Quest

This transfer guide provides the answers to the most common questions for students transferring into UCF. We provide an online version to this guide. For students currently attending a Florida community college, Knight Quest may also be available through their college's advising office. They are also available through UCF's regional campuses. Out-of-state students who would like a copy, please contact us and we will mail you one.

CLAST Information

The College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is designed to ensure that students have achieved communication and computation skills commensurate with successful completion of the lower-division course work. All students seeking an Associate in Arts or a baccalaureate degree from a State of Florida Institution are required to satisfy the CLAST requirement. There are several methods by which students may meet this requirement.

The CLAST policy will be enforced. Transfer students with more than 60 semester hours who have not taken the CLAST or who have not met the CLAST requirement may be admitted, but they must take the CLAST exam during their first semester at UCF.

Information regarding preparation for the CLAST or alternative criteria for meeting the CLAST requirement may be obtained from the Student Academic Resource Center and the University Testing Center(HPH 106); 407-823-5130. Academic advising offices within each college can assist students.

A.S. to B.S. Programs

UCF offers eight specialized baccalaureate degree programs for students who have graduated from a Florida community college with an A.S. in one of the following eight programs: Criminal Justice, Electrical Engineering Technology, Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Information Systems Technology, Liberal Studies, Nursing, and Radiologic Technology. The A.S. to B.S. programs page offers more information about these special degree programs.
